Actress Reveals Hardships Faced During Acting Break

Actress Myung Se-bin candidly discussed the financial difficulties she endured during her career hiatus on a recent episode of tvN's popular variety show 'You Quiz on the Block,' which aired on November 26.

Career Resurgence Through Relatable Content

The actress is currently experiencing a career renaissance thanks to her role in 'Manager Kim's Story of Living in Seoul with a House and Working at a Major Company.' Myung shared that she receives numerous messages from viewers saying "this is my story," praising the drama for its realistic and entertaining portrayal of everyday life.

She revealed that opportunities are now flowing in, including drama scripts, movie scenarios, and even a shampoo commercial. "I hope more advertisements come in," she said with a smile, adding, "Because I've gone through such difficult times, I want to do even better now."

From National First Love to Financial Struggles

Host Yoo Jae-suk noted that Myung had achieved fame as the "nation's first love" through dramas like 'Pure' and 'Paper Crane,' and had built a successful career through her 30s before an unexpected hiatus occurred. Myung responded with a bittersweet smile, saying "life doesn't go the way you want."

During her inactive period, the actress faced serious financial challenges. "I couldn't pay my credit card bills since I wasn't working. I was in my 30s and didn't want to rely on my parents' help," she recalled. "When things got really tough, fortunately special appearance offers would come in, and that's how I managed to get by."

Selling Personal Items and Learning New Skills

The actress admitted to selling her belongings to make ends meet. "When I ran out of money, I even sold my bags. I thought a lot about 'what can I sell to get more money?' I was too embarrassed to go alone, so I would bring a friend with me to sell bags," she confessed.

Facing uncertainty about her acting career, Myung decided to study floristry as a backup plan. She enrolled in a florist school, attending classes from 9 AM to 5 PM. "I did well enough to work part-time decorating flowers at wedding venues. It was physically exhausting work. I had thought of it as pretty and beautiful, but it's actually very demanding," she explained.

Grateful for Second Chances

Reflecting on her journey, Myung expressed gratitude for her comeback. "I thought I was finished as an actor, but seeing myself recover made me realize that if you persist until the end, it's possible. These days I'm so happy. I have a dream of becoming an actor who makes people feel comfortable and at ease when they see me."

When Yoo Jae-suk asked what she would tell her younger self, Myung replied with humor: "I'd tell myself 'work a little harder. What kind of acting is that? Analyze your scripts more deeply. Things will work out, so practice your acting more.'"
