AKMU's journey began in 2012 when they won the top prize on SBS's competitive audition program K-Pop Star Season 2. The siblings captivated audiences with their exceptional songwriting abilities, composing skills, and distinctive vocal talents. This victory led to an exclusive contract with YG Entertainment in 2014, launching their official debut as recording artists.

In 2019, the duo rebranded themselves as AKMU, continuing to release music and perform under this name.
