2PM's Wooyoung Regrets Choosing Cash Over JYP Stock During Contract Renewal
2PM's Wooyoung Expresses Regret Over Missing Out on JYP Stock
2PM member Jang Wooyoung revealed his regret about choosing cash instead of company stock when renewing his contract with JYP Entertainment.
Discussion on Popular Web Variety Show
On October 16th, Wooyoung appeared as a guest alongside MAMAMOO's Hwasa on the web variety show 'Pinggyego' on the YouTube channel 'Ttun Ttun.' During the episode, Wooyoung introduced himself as "JYP's External Affairs Director." When host Yoo Jae-suk asked if he had any company shares, Wooyoung replied, "No, I don't really understand things like stocks."
The Contract Renewal Decision
Wooyoung explained the circumstances of his first contract renewal: "Usually when you renew, you're given the option to receive your signing bonus either as company shares or cash. At that time, we didn't know what would happen to the company. Jin-young hyung said, 'This might look less like giving you an option and more like asking you to invest in the company.' A few days later, he told us, 'I decided to just give the kids cash as their signing bonus.'"
Hindsight Brings Regret
Yoo Jae-suk commented, "JYP hyung was being considerate," to which Wooyoung responded with laughter, "He was, but looking back now, it drives me crazy." In reality, JYP Entertainment's market capitalization has reportedly skyrocketed approximately 16-fold over the past decade.
When Yoo Jae-suk noted, "Who would have known it would turn out this way," and Jo Se-ho asked, "If you could turn back time, how much would you buy," Wooyoung honestly answered, "I probably would have bought everything."
A Common Dilemma Among Artists
Yoo Jae-suk tried to offer comfort, saying, "Not many people who actually received stock made profits," and Hwasa also related to the experience, sharing, "I was also offered stock, but I said I didn't understand it."
